5 Ways To Preserve Your Hearing

May 25, 2017vhcadminHearing Aids Tips

It’s a scary thought, that once one’s hearing goes, it may be impossible to restore it naturally. Although options such as surgery and cochlea implants do happen from time to time, they are a very limited option. The best option for everyone is to protect their hearing as best as they can. Harmful decibel levels are the major cause of hearing loss. If you don’t want to be affected, therefore, you can preserve your hearing ability in these five ways:

1. Find ways to avoid noisy environments
There is noise all around us. And although sometimes you may not have control over this noise, in some cases you do. Where possible, simple stay away from noisy places. For example, you can avoid using the noisy subway and opt for a taxi or a bus instead. If planning to eat out, you can ditch crowded outlets filled with noise and opt for a quieter, less busy cafe. If you’re living next to a noisy workshop or night club, think about moving or petitioning to have the noisy business relocated. You have options; use them.

2. Limit your time in noisy areas
Your lifestyle may make it impossible to avoid noisy environments all the time. In such cases, moderation is the key. Harmful decibel levels cause hearing loss after prolonged exposure. So if you have to stay in noisy environments, do so but only for limited durations. For example, if you have to go to the night club with your friends, limit your stay there to just a few hours. If travelling, listen to your radio or music player for just an hour instead of the whole time.

3. Wear protective hearing equipment
Some people work in environments that are noisy all through, e.g. airports, music studios, construction factories, etc. If this applies to you, get ear protection equipment and use it when working. You can buy ear plugs and ear muffs from pharmacies or online. You can even ask your employer to provide them for you. Ear protection equipment will significantly reduce the decibel levels getting to your ear, as well as prolong your safe exposure threshold.

4. Monitor the noise around you
Another way to preserve your hearing is to always monitor the noise around you. Sometimes we get so used to noises around us that we forget just how loud and harmful they are. For example, according to this guide by ASHA, a kitchen blender or a blow dryer produces up to 90 decibels of sound while a lawn mower produces 106 decibels of sound. Remember that the safe limit is just 85 decibels. Anything above that and your hearing is at risk.

5. Use hearing aids
And if you are already suffering from partial or total hearing loss, you can restore your senses by using hearing aids. Hearing aids are the cheapest, easiest, and fastest way to get your hearing back. They work by converting sounds into electrical signals and then amplifying them. This bypasses the function of the damaged cochlea hairs and allows you to enjoy normal or near-normal hearing.

Follow these tips and start taking better care of your hearing today.
