Hearing Aid Maintenance 101

December 20, 2017vhcadminHearing Aids Tips

Hearing aids, just like most gadgets or electrical devices, need good maintenance. Needless to say, you want your new hearing aids to last as long as possible. To make that happen, follow the advice below and give your hearing equipment some much-needed longevity.

  1. Cleaning

Cleaning is a vital part of maintaining hearing aids. One of the biggest threats to the functioning of your hearing aids is earwax. Hearing aids that go inside the ear are most affected by this. If not checked, the earwax can cause blockage or wear of some of the components in your devices. Dust and moisture are other huge threats to the functioning of your hearing aids. To keep all these threats are bay, clean your hearing aids regularly. However, don’t use water or alcohol wipes/swabs to do this. Only use the cleaning agents provided with the hearing aids. You can also clean them using a dry clean cloth.

  1. Keep away from water

Being electrical devices, hearing aids should be kept away from water at all costs. Water will short-circuit the electrical components inside the aids, rendering them unusable. As such, do not wear your aids when bathing or swimming. If your aids are worn outside the ear, keep them away from the rain. And as mentioned earlier, do not clean them using water.

  1. Storage

When not using your hearing aids, store them safely away from the reach of pets and children. Proper storage of your hearing aids will prevent premature damage. It will also ensure that you do not forget where you stored your aids. But even more importantly, storing your hearing aids inside the provided cases will shield them from dust and moisture – the biggest threats to the durability of your aids.

  1. Proper fitting

It is also important to learn how to properly fit your new hearing aids. Your audiologist or hearing aids reseller should help you with this. Worn correctly, your new hearing aids should fit comfortably and snugly. Fitting your hearing aids well ensures that you enjoy the right hearing capabilities. And in regards to maintenance, proper fitting of your hearing aids prevents them from falling to the ground and getting damaged.

  1. Adjusting the controls

Learn how to adjust the control of your hearing aids. Too much fiddling with the delicate controls can damage the delicate parts and necessitate costly replacement of parts or the entire device. Tuning of the hearing aids should be kept to a minimum and only on a need-basis.

  1. Battery replacement

Your hearing aids’ batteries will run out of power at some point. To prolong their longevity, remove the batteries from the devices every evening when you go to bed. This will disconnect the power overnight.

Also, learn how to replace your batteries. It’s simple. Simply open the battery door on your hearing device, remove the used battery, and replace the new one with the +ve and the –ve sides facing the indicated directions.

  1. Regular servicing by an expert

And of course, proper maintenance of your hearing aids means seeking maintenance from a professional every once in a while. Doing this 2-3 times a year is ideal.
