Invisible Hearing Aids

December 20, 2017vhcadminHearing Aids

Invisible hearing aids are the latest technology when it comes to hearing devices. And they are a big hit in the market. They are selling fast and everyone seems to love them. But wait, what are invisible hearing aids exactly? Well, they’re not made of an invisible material – no such thing exists. Read on to find out what they are, and lots more!

What are invisible hearing aids?

A common trend in technology is that devices and gadgets keep getting smaller as the tech gets more and more advanced. The same applies to hearing aids too. Decades ago, hearing aids were bulky and ‘shouty’. Today, these devices have shrunk in size tremendously.

Invisible hearing aids are also called invisible-in-canal (IIC) hearing aids. And the reason they are called so is that they cannot be seen when worn. They are smaller than the completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids. Chances are that even if you peeked inside the ear of the wearer, you still wouldn’t be able to spot them. That’s because they are worn halfway down the ear canal. And that is where they get their name from.

Who can wear invisible hearing aids?

Anyone can wear invisible hearing aids. There are no restrictions unless your audiologist suggests so.

The ‘invisibility’ of these aids, however, does make them ideal for people who feel shy or self-aware about wearing hearing aids. If you do not want the world to know that you’re wearing hearing aids, these will meet your needs just perfectly. However, note that there are other sizes of hearing aids that are almost as conspicuous.

Teens, young adults, and modern white-collar workers are more inclined to wear invisible hearing aids due to their environments and the need to fit in.

Pros of invisible hearing aids
  • The biggest advantage of invisible hearing aids is that no one will know you’re wearing them. So there will be no curious stares of inquisitive questions coming your away.
  • Another advantage of these aids is that, because they are fitted deep inside the ear canal, they do not face interruption from the wind. They are therefore great for outdoor applications such as golfing or sports.
  • Besides that, if you’re self-conscious about your looks, these aids will make you feel like you fit in with everyone else.
Cons of invisible hearing aids

Despite their pros and high-tech nature, invisible hearing aids have their cons as well. These include:

  • They are more likely to be affected by wax due to their positioning in the ear. They, therefore, have to be taken out regularly and cleaned.
  • In order to make them small enough to fit inside the ear, IIC’s lack many modern hearing aid features. These differ from brand to brand but they normally include volume buttons, omnidirectional capabilities, wireless functionality, telecoil, and more.
  • You may also find it difficult to fit in some of the models into your ear due to size incompatibility.

If you are interested in wearing invisible hearing aids, be sure to talk to your audiologist first. They will advise if you are a suitable candidate, as well as any other concerns you may need to know first.
