If you’ve suffered some hearing loss, then a hearing aid may be the best solution for you. After speaking with your physician, and getting a proper fitting and adjustment from your audiologist, you may find solutions that will regain some if not all your hearing. However, certain smartphones can cause issues when it comes to the type of hearing aid system you may be using. Here are some tips on how to evaluate if there are any existing problems when using your cell phone.
If you have a hearing aid or cochlear implant, you’ll be happy to know the Federal Communications Commission is now required cell phone manufacturers to build smartphone devices that have less static, interference from outside noises and can connect to the telecoil more efficiently. That’s great news for most of us who have these devices and are looking for more compatibility. However, its up to you to find the right mobile phone that is compatible with your hearing aid device.
Cell phones that are suitable for your device will have the Hearing Aid Compatible logo somewhere demonstrating these phones support and work well with these medical devices. You’ll also want to look for model cell phones with a microphone rating of M3 or M4. The next part to look for is if the telecoil rating is T3 or higher. This part of the phone will help you hear the conversation clearer. The phones that have a combined score equaling 4-6 will inevitably be your best choice.
There are additional devices that will help make the connections better. You’ll want to seek tools that allow you to operate your phone in a “hands-free” operation when you’re driving. Look for the devices designed with a hook or neck loop. These external pieces tend to make your hearing and life a lot better. The neck loops and ear hook pieces use a technology known as Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) where you should be able to find that in the manufacture’s box or in their detailed description.
Most phones will have the obvious such as volume control and are TTY or Text Telephone compatible. Also, make sure you enable this feature when you purchase the phone.
These are a few things to be aware of when buying a mobile phone or looking for a mobile device that will be the best choice to suit your needs.
