5 Things to do During the First Days of Wearing Hearing Aids

March 13, 2017vhcadminHearing Aids

The first time you put on your hearing aids, expect to feel different. A positive mindset is key to continue using your device on your way to better your hearing. Better hearing can help you to improve your relationships and physical health. If you want to continue wearing the hearing aids for longer, perhaps you need to start with these 5 key steps during the first days with your new device:

  1. Wear the hearing aids for a few hours

On the first days, it’s ok to wear the device for just a few hours. This is because you are likely to feel very frustrated in uncomfortable situations and environments. Some sounds may be so difficult to filter out and recognize. However, you will need to wear the hearing aids more regularly in future. In fact, the more you wear the device, the more the sounds you will be able to recognize even if you are in a very noise space. Your brain and ears will be able to connect faster as you get used to wearing the device.

  1. Write down unusual sounds

When you wear the hearing aids for the first time, go to a quiet room. You may realize that sounds like the ticking of a clock are very pronounced. This is completely normal since your brain isn’t used to these sounds. You can try and write down all these unusual sounds. Before your next visit, go through the list to see if you still notice these sounds that seemed to bother you from the initial days.

  1. Avoid making manual adjustments

The common mistake most first-time hearing aids wearers do is to adjust the device to ensure that they can hear even faint sounds a mile away. These devices do not work like that. Adjusting the volume too much can even damage your hearing. Remember that hearing aids are designed to function more or less like your ears. Do not try and make adjustments to make the device do something that a normal functioning ear cannot do.

  1. Try identifying familiar voices

When wearing hearing aids for the first time, you can start having conversations with people around you like family and friends. These are the familiar voices you are more likely to recognize. Also, make sure you face them during the conversation. This will help your brain to connect with the ears faster by looking at the body language as well as vocal patterns.

  1. Listen to your own voice

Try reading to yourself immediately after wearing the hearing aids. This may help you to recognize the sound of your voice. Read to yourself out loud. Retrain yourself how to adjust your own volume so that you don’t shout when talking to people.

Give yourself a week or so before you can start wearing the device everyday. This consistency in the use of hearing aids helps the brain to adjust better and will also ensure that you become as comfortable as possible wearing the device.
