Tips for Taking Care of Your Hearing Aids

April 3, 2017vhcadminBlog, Hearing Aids1 comment

When you use hearing aids, it is important to take care of the devices because they contribute to your quality of life and sometimes your safety. It’s common for the devices to get wet, fall or get lost. You need to know how to handle such emergencies. The worst thing you can do when your hearing aids get damaged or lost is to panic. Even though it’s common to have feelings of confusion and anxiety, it is important to remain calm and take charge of the situation. Below are a few tips that will help you to prevent certain issues that can cause loss or damage of your hearing device and how to act when they occur.

How to avoid losing your hearing aids

Your hearing aids can easily be pulled off when you take off your sweater, scarf or basically any garment that will come into contact with your neck or ears. It is very important to be very careful when taking off clothes especially while outside your home. One way to avoid losing your hearing aids when taking off clothes is to use the devices that are designed with earmolds or grips which are meant to keep them intact at all times.

What to do if you lose your hearing aids

Should you notice that your hearing aids have come off, relax and ask everyone else around to stop moving. You can try to retrace your steps and recall the last time you had them on. You can also check your clothes because they could be stuck inside your garments. Ask the people around you to help in searching for the device.

How to prevent hearing aids from getting wet

It is very common for hearing devices to get into contact with water especially since most people will remove them in the bathroom or toilet. The device can easily fall into the drain. That’s why it is always recommended that hearing aids should be removed in the bedroom as opposed to the bathroom and toilet.

If the hearing aids end up catching water, get them out as fast as you can. The next thing you should probably do is to disinfect the hearing aids. You can use a non-alcoholic disinfectant that is designed for hearing aids. Also, check to see if they are still working. If you notice something is off, you can try and remove the battery and put it inside an air dryer. Make sure they are clean and disinfected before putting them back in your ears again. If the device refuses to work completely after getting into contact with water, get in touch with your audiologist.

Don’t suffer with a lost or damaged hearing aid, it is important to speak to a specialist immediately. If you notice that the hearing aids do not perform as well as they used to after dropping them or getting into contact with water, go and get them checked. Most importantly, practice a little care to avoid common mishaps and enjoy using your device for longer.

I like the recommendation to be careful when removing sweaters or jackets because the hearing aid could come out and fall. My mom will be getting hearing aids soon and I want to make sure she doesn’t lose or damage them. It’s something to talk to her about because taking extra care of them would be good just to ensure nothing happens that could cause them to not work.
