5 Important Questions to Ask your Audiologist

April 11, 2017vhcadminHealth and Hearing Aids1 comment

If you are planning on visiting an audiologist for the first time, you probably have lots of questions to ask the specialist. Getting information from your friends or on Google is never a sure way to know how to manage your hearing issue or any device that is given to you. You are better off getting credible facts from an audiologist. For that reason, utilize the time you have during that first visit to ask the right questions. Here’s what you probably need to know:

  • Level of qualification and the type of hearing specialist

There are different specialists in hearing that offer different kinds of services. For instance, an audiologist is trained to diagnose, treat and evaluate hearing and balance problems. You can visit the audiologist to have your hearing loss treated or fit hearing aids based on your needs. Audiologists usually don’t perform any surgeries but are able to identify medical issues and help in hearing loss management.

Should you need any surgeries, an ENT doctor is more capable of performing it. ENTS may also fit hearing aids but this is not their area of specialization. A hearing aid specialist or a hearing instrument specialist is the one trained on how to evaluate hearing loss and dispense devices to manage the condition better.

  • How much will you spend on hearing aids

The cost of hearing aids will depend on many things from the condition you want to manage to the type of device and its features. You can spend anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 on hearing aids. It is always best to discuss with the audiologist your unique needs so that they can find the right devices to suit your budget and lifestyle. You should be able to evaluate options when you visit the hearing loss specialist and walk out of the room with a clear idea of how different devices will help manage your condition.

  • Are all hearing aids the same?

When you visit a hearing loss specialist, make a goal of getting as much information as possible on the options of hearing aids you have. It’s good to know the difference between different devices and why one is costlier than the other or what kinds of features are best suited for your lifestyle. Some hearing aids are more suited for the nature of your hearing loss and only a specialist can help you to narrow down the options. Work together to find a hearing aid that is best for you.

  • Can you provide an after-care plan?

Always ask the hearing loss specialist to give you details on an after-care plan. This could be in the form of follow-up appointments where more evaluations will be done to determine if your condition is improving or provision of online and offline resources that will help you to manage the hearing loss. You can ask the specialist to also offer you ways to rehabilitate your hearing.  In the event that you may need emergency help, ask the specialist what actions to take.

My father has been losing his hearing recently. Looking for a good audiologist that can help the situation has been my mom’s top priority, but she’s not sure what to look for. I didn’t realize how important it is to choose an audiologist that can provide an after-care plan to ensure you know if your condition is improving or what other provisions need to be taken to manage your hearing loss. I’ll be sure to share this information with my parents.
