How to Care for Hearing Aids

May 1, 2017vhcadminHearing Aids Tips1 comment

Hearing aids are big investments that play an important part in your life. They give you a chance to enjoy quality life with better hearing. These helpful devices are designed to last for three to five years. However, for them to last this long, you have to care for them well. Below are some practices that you should follow to maintain your hearing aids in a good condition and to ensure that they last for the desired period.

Clean Your Ears Well

Wax from your ears can accumulate in the opening of the hearing aid causing the sound to be unclear. Thus it is important to keep your ears clean if you are using hearing aids. If earwax accumulates on the hearing aid, then use a wax pick to clean it. If you leave it on the device for  long, it will cause damage to the receiver.

Clean the Hearing Aids Regularly with a Soft Cloth

Wipe the hearing aid regularly with a soft cloth to remove dirt. Don’t dip it in water or use cleaning chemicals as they might damage the electronic parts of the device. However, you can remove the ear molds and clean them with a mild detergent. Inquire from a professional the best soap to use for cleaning them. After cleaning, make sure that they are completely dry before reattaching them.

Leave the Battery Door Open at Night

Moisture will build up inside hearing aids from time to time. Thus it helps to leave the battery door open at night when you go to bed. Turning off the hearing aid before going to bed helps prevent unnecessary battery usage. An open battery door allows air to flow in and components to dry. If the moisture is excess, you may need a silica drying agent to get rid of it. Buy a drying agent from hearing care professionals to ensure that it is safe and effective. Removing moisture from your hearing aids helps in prolonging their life.

Avoid High Temperatures

Hearing aids should always be kept away from heat. You should avoid placing them next to heaters or in direct sunlight. When using a hair dryer, remove your hearing aids to protect them from damage. In addition to heat, extreme cold should be avoided too.

Keep Hearing Aids Away From Chemicals

You should ensure that your hearing aids do not come into contact with perfumes, hairsprays, lotions and insecticides. This is because they can clog your hearing devices thereby damaging them. You can remove your hearing aids when spraying your hair and put them back on afterwards.

Avoid Dropping Your Hearing Aids

When cleaning or changing batteries, handle your hearing aids with care to ensure that they don’t fall. Change your batteries on a large table or surface and cover it with a soft towel to prevent damage in case you drop them accidentally. If your hearing aids fall down or are hit by a hard object, take them to a professional to ensure they are not damaged.

I really like what you recommend about avoiding having the hearing aids in high-temperature environments. It makes sense that being in direct sunlight during a hot summer day would potentially cause the hearing aid to overheat. I’ll have to remember this for when my mom gets hers because I wouldn’t want it to break just because of our negligence.
