What Is Tinnitus?

July 26, 2017vhcadminBlog, Health and Hearing Aids

If you read up on hearing loss or hearing related-problems or hearing aids, you are bound to come across the term Tinnitus. And if you have hearing problems or are exposed to harmful decibels, there is a slight chance that you may be predisposed to Tinnitus already. Below, discover what Tinnitus is, what causes it, and more.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a hearing condition in which an individual hears abnormal noises coming from their ear. The noises cannot be heard by anyone other than the person suffering from the condition. Most people describe Tinnitus as a constant ringing in their ears. However, the condition can vary from person to person. For other people it’s a buzzing sound and for others it’s a humming sound. Basically, if you keep hearing abnormal sounds emanating from your ear – you may have Tinnitus.

Different types of Tinnitus

Tinnitus, as already alluded, affects different people differently. For one, the sounds may be different as explained above. Two, the sounds inside the ear may last for varying amounts of time. For some, the sounds are only present for short while (mild Tinnitus). Others experience the sounds for hours (moderate Tinnitus). And others suffer from Tinnitus round the clock (severe Tinnitus). Thirdly, Tinnitus can also vary depending on its cause as explained below.

What causes it?

Tinnitus can be caused by various factors. The most common one by far is harmful decibel levels. Most people will experience mild Tinnitus after being exposed to loud noises, e.g. explosions, loud music, etc. This can last for a few minutes or an hour. Other causes of Tinnitus include ear infections, ear wax build up, and medical conditions such as vertigo. If you’re not sure about the cause of your Tinnitus, see an ear specialist.

What it means if you have Tinnitus

Tinnitus is considered a symptom of hearing conditions rather than a condition by itself. This means that if you are suffering from Tinnitus, there could be an underlying hearing issue that is causing it. Visit an audiologist for an examination.

In most cases, Tinnitus will go away by itself. However, if this doesn’t happen in your case, seek medical treatment immediately.

How to cure Tinnitus

Tinnitus can be cured. The best way to go about this is to have a medical practitioner narrow down the cause of your Tinnitus. Dealing with the underlying causes is the surest and most effective way to tackle Tinnitus.

In some cases, however, there is no obvious cause of the Tinnitus. In such cases, the best option is to seek other medical treatment options such as cognitive behavior therapy, counseling, and therapy.

In conclusion..

Tinnitus can affect anyone and at any given time. It is, however, more common among older people. In the US, it is estimated that over 40 million people suffer from the condition. And most of them suffer from varying degrees of hearing loss by extension. If you suspect that you may be suffering from Tinnitus, seek a medical examination quickly so that you can start using hearing aids if indeed you have an onset of hearing loss.
