Changing The Batteries In Your Hearing Aid

June 20, 2017vhcadminBlog, Hearing Aids Tips

Hearing aids are powered by batteries similar to what you’d find in watches. Over time, therefore, when the batteries have run out of steam, you will need to change them so that your hearing aids can continue to function. In this post, we answer all your questions regarding changing batteries in your hearing aids.

How to tell that your batteries need changing

You can tell that the batteries in your hearing aids need changing once their power starts to deteriorate. This is where the volume starts to dip no matter high you turn it up. Initially, you might mistake this for a faulty hearing aid. However, by paying close attention to the quick and gradual loss of power in your device, you will soon come to understand it for what it is – dying batteries.

How often should the batteries be changed?

There is no fixed interval after which you should change your batteries. How long your hearing aid batteries last will depend on a number of variables such as how big your hearing aid is, what type/brand of battery you’re using, how often or how long you use your hearing aids, etc. In most cases, batteries will last about 2-4 weeks. The best strategy here is to learn how long your batteries last as per your individual usage patterns.

Should you change the batteries yourself?

Yes, you can change your hearing aid batteries yourself. It’s very simple and any one can do it, from young children to elderly persons. Changing the batteries yourself is actually the most convenient option because you never know what time of the day the batteries will run out, where you’ll be or if there will be someone with you to do the changing for you.

How to change your hearing aids batteries

To change your hearing aid batteries, simply take out your hearing aid from the ear. Look for the battery compartment. Open the compartment either by sliding it open, pressing an eject lock or prying it open. This will depend on the type of hearing aid device you have. Take out the used battery. Insert the new battery and be sure to remove the sticker first. Ensure to place the new battery in the same position as the old one – with the (+) sign facing up.

Can your hearing aid dealer change the batteries for you?

Your hearing aids dealer can change the batteries for you. However, this is not a sustainable option in the long term because you can’t keep going back to them every few weeks. You can go to them the first time you need your batteries changed. But after that you should be able to do it on your own.

Where to buy hearing aid batteries?

Your hearing aid dealer should be able to sell you the batteries. Most supermarket chains and pharmacies also stock them. You can also order them online. Just make sure to order the right size.

How to make your batteries last longer

There’s not much you can do to make your batteries last longer without compromising your hearing quality. One viable option though, is to turn your hearing aids off at night when going to sleep, especially if you usually sleep without them.
