How Do Hearing Aids Work?

August 28, 2017vhcadminBlog, Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are ideal for people experiencing limitations in their hearing. These aids have the ability to amplify sound so that a person hears everything much clearer and louder. The technological device is made up of several components namely microphone, battery, receiver, amplifier and microchip. In most cases, your doctor will program the communication device so that it can meet your needs. Both adults and children can use hearing aids to enhance their listening experience regardless of their level of hearing loss.

Although hearing aids are similar in terms of construction, they are generally placed in two categories namely analog and digital. These two listening devices have significant differences in the way they work, giving those suffering from partial hearing loss a chance to choose which works best for them.

Analog hearing aids

Analog listening devices have been used for many decades with their popularity going down due to the entry of digital versions. Nevertheless, some people still prefer using them for personal reasons. Analog hearing aids have a simple working system which involves the picking up of sounds by the microphone and converting them into electric signals. Next, the signals are amplified through transistors which then feed them to the microphone for easier understanding by the person wearing the listening device.

The improved version of analog hearing aids can isolate sounds making the output much clearer. Quiet sounds are also better amplified so that they are loud enough while at the same time regulating sounds that are already loud to avoid discomfort in the ear. With the newer version, patients using analog hearing aids can easily hear only the sounds they need even in noisy places.

Digital hearing aids

Hearing aids that use digital technology are quite popular because of their incorporation of revolutionary equipment and scientific knowledge in their construction. Majority of them contain silicon chips that comprise of electrical mechanisms which process received sounds on a continuous basis. These sounds are converted to audible sounds that are much clearer before being released as appropriate sounds into the ear.

Apart from delivering sounds that can be easily understood by the person using the hearing aid, the cutting technology also distinguishes sounds, amplifying those that need to be louder while reducing unwanted noise. This ability helps users distinguish related sounds making it clearer for those using the digital listening device. One of the major advantages that hearing aids have over their analog counterparts is their ability to be adjusted to suit an individual’s preferences and their level of hearing loss. In some models, the technological device automatically adjusts itself depending on the sounds within a certain environment.

In general, hearing devices are quite a number in the market, making it important to consult qualified health professionals before making a purchase. Majority of them will run some tests to determine the level of hearing loss before recommending the best devices to buy and use. If you are looking to switch from analog to digital, they can also help you in deciding on which hearing aid to buy.
