How Often Should My Hearing Be Tested?

August 28, 2017vhcadminBlog, Health and Hearing Aids

Changes in one’s hearing can occur at any time, and for many reasons. The two main causes are old age and exposure to very loud sounds. In most cases, hearing loss takes place gradually with many people seeking temporary solutions instead of getting their hearing tested. However, if one is at risk of losing their ability to hear, it is advisable to take steps towards minimizing the loss by scheduling regular screenings for you and your family. Majority of general practitioners can perform hearing tests, but in some cases, you may need to seek help from a specialist.

Hearing tests should be a routine occurrence for anyone that values their health and that of their family. Nevertheless, there are some people that may need to get their ears tested more frequently such as:

Adults over forty years

As one gets older, the structure of the ear begins to change affecting the inner ear, middle ear and sometimes the nerve pathways that connect the ear to the brain. The general wear of a person’s ear when aging often affects their ability to hear well. In most cases, you will have to seek regular screenings of the ear for the changes to be monitored, around twice a year. Even so, cases of young people losing their hearing due to exposure to harmful decibel levels have also been reported, emphasizing the need to have hearing checked regularly.

People working in noisy environments

If you are working in an environment that exposes you to harmful noise, you may experience hearing problems or permanent loss hearing. To reduce the chances of hearing loss, it is advisable to schedule appointments for specialized screening at least twice a year. During your appointment, you may need to discuss with your doctor about the possibility of getting ear protection gear that is customized for your needs.

People with hearing difficulties

Hearing loss is gradual and usually starts off with a person struggling to hear high-pitched noises, noticing people mumbling, and even having to ask for words to be repeated many times. If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms, you need to contact your doctor immediately and have your hearing examined. The hearing tests will reveal the cause of the problem and treatment will be provided to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

Hearing aid patients

People that use hearing aids to enhance their ability to hear should have their ears tested on a regular basis. The testing appointments should be annual to ensure that the devices are properly programmed. In cases where your hearing aid may not be working, it is advisable to have your ears tested to check for changes in your hearing and for the doctor to advise on the way forward.

Regular hearing tests help your doctor pick up early signs of damage to your ears so that they can advise on the best treatment to avoid permanent loss of hearing. Also, testing on a regular basis helps you learn about the best ways to take care of your hearing all through life.
