Hearing Aids: Controlling Background Noise

September 20, 2017vhcadminBlog, Hearing Aids, Hearing Aids Tips

The inability to hear well is often frustrating, particularly for people that enjoy having great conversations and interacting with others. Most times, getting a hearing aid is a relief, especially if one has endured strained listening for many years. However, the use of these listening devices has a challenge when it comes to background noise. Some hearing aids are unable to prevent the noises in the background which often distracts the person wearing them from their main conversation.

Fortunately, getting overwhelmed with background noise can stop being the norm for those using the hearing aids for the first time as well as those that have had them for an extended time period. Here are a number of ways in which you can minimize the impact of noise when wearing these listening devices.

  1.  Practice patience

Wearing hearing aids for the first time can feel awkward and noisy because of the ‘boost’ they give to all sounds around you. It is important to understand that it will take time to get used to them as your brain tries to reorganize itself to filter through the new sounds. However, if you need assistance in mastering the use of the listening devices, you can enroll for auditory training with help from a health professional.

  1. Try wearing a pair of hearing aids

In most cases, hearing loss affects one ear resulting in many people buying only one hearing aid. However, the use of one listening device causes an imbalance in identifying sounds and noises because the amplified output is concentrated in one single ear. To avoid such situations, it is advisable to wear a pair of hearing aids to balance out the sound and make everyday communication much easier.

  1. Use digitally advanced hearing aids

As technology has advanced, so have the components used in the construction of hearing aids.  Most of the digitally advanced hearing aids have been designed to reduce background noise as much as possible. Some of the features that are available involve the use of digital signal processing which helps hearing aids to make a distinction between noise and actual speech. They also have directional microphones that allow users to determine from which side the device will pick sounds.

  1. Buy new hearing aids

Hearing aids are designed to make listening much easier and give a better experience to someone suffering from hearing loss. However, when the listening device is not working at its best, it may result in excessive background noise. If you are facing such a situation, it is advisable to have them checked out by a health professional for any problems and have them fine-tuned if necessary. If there is no change after adjustments are made, you may need to consider buying new hearing aids that minimize background noise.

If you are looking for a better listening experience using hearing aids, consider trying out the above options. However, if the background noise does not reduce, it is advisable to seek help from a healthcare professional.
